Pro Comp Suspension Takes the Jeep JK to a New Level

JEEP'S NEW JK is like that old saying about getting your cake and eating it too. As reviewed in our February issue, the chassis was enlarged for a four-door configuration, but with no compromise in off-road capability. The thing is, we like icing on our cake, too, which means finding some sweet stuff to throw on the suspension.

Fortunately, the master chefs at Pro Comp have just cooked up a new four-inch lift for the 2007 JK Wrangler. This new Pro Comp Stage II X Flex Suspension System provides top-level performance for both the two-door and four-door Unlimited models. All necessary components are combined in a complete bolt-on package that provides superior flexibility and improved ride quality, while making enough room for 35-inch tires. The adjustable-length front upper arms are included to optimize alignment specifications. Other features include a heavy-duty adjustable front track bar and rear track bar bracket for proper axle alignment. Note also that the front sway bar disconnects for greater articulation in extreme terrain. Completing the kit are rear sway bar links, bump stops and offset brake-line relocation brackets.

On a technical note, the 2007 Jeep JK includes as standard equipment an ESP (Electronic Stability Program) that aids the driver in maintaining vehicle directional stability in severe driving maneuvers on any type of surface. ESP features three modes: "full on," "full off" and "partial on." ESP provides the greatest benefit in critical driving situations such as turns, and is especially valuable when driving on mixed surface conditions including snow, ice or gravel. If there's a discernible difference between what the driver directs through the steering wheel and the vehicle's path, ESP applies selective braking and throttle inputs in order to put the vehicle back into the driver's intended course.

On a lifted Jeep JK, the ESP system will activate when the steering wheel and the front steering system are not in proper alignment. So a professional front-end alignment of the vehicle must be done immediately following installation of any suspension lift system. The proper alignment includes adjusting the steering drag link and centering the steering wheel. Failure to align the front of the vehicle will result in automatic activation of the ESP system, which could result in some unpredictable maneuvers. After all, while we like to have our cake, we don't necessarily need help to enjoy it.
