CP, S&M - Of Cell Phones, Smoke and Mirrors

Story & Photos by Ned Bacon
Without skipping a beat, Felipe was out of the Jeep and searching for a mirror. He explained we had to signal the ferryboat captain who lived on one of the “islands” across the pond — perhaps four miles distant! While Chris and Felipe played with the communications device, Enzo, Nino and I prepared lunch; beer, cheese, crackers and beer. It might be a wait for the ferry we were told. After a while we heard the whump-whump-whump of... a helicopter! It seems Felipe’s good buddy Walter and his wife Kristine had decided to fly their Robertson R44 from Caracas to see how our adventure was going. The trip had taken them a few hours so Walter was beginning to relax when Felipe suggested he fly over to the island and tell the boatman we needed a lift. Walter hopped in his craft and buzzed over to the island. In no time we heard an outboard engine bringing the barge to our rescue.
