The only saving grace is, Felipe is a terrific, if not determined, driver who pushes hard and clearly prides himself on his talents. You could tell he enjoyed the challenge, and his relaxed manner behind the wheel was somewhat reassuring that we would survive. Aggressive driving is a way of life in third world countries and we experienced all the rites of passage; passing trucks on blind corners, passing three abreast with oncoming traffic, playing who’s got the brighter high beams? (Whoa! Hit ‘em with the HIDs!) None of this was new to me, but doing it at 80 mph in an overloaded, sprung-over YJ on 35” mudders, with the 4.0L screaming at redline in third gear and the driver chattering continuously about God-knows-what in Spanish to his bro on the CB, was all a bit unnerving. When Chris and I traded vehicles to get different perspectives, he gave me a “How-do-ya-like-it-now” look as he climbed from the Toyota. I must say, its civility, extra power and Enzo’s, shall we say, slightly less aggressive approach to driving, (i.e. follow Felipe) took some of the edge off.
